DATE & TIME OCCURRED:  10/20/22  at  3:36 AM

LOCATION OCCURRED:  Parking Lot of Trinity Court (Canal Pointe Development)

REPORTING OFFICER:  Ptl. C. Crawford #5108

DETAILS:  Patrol Units responded to a theft in progress in the parking lot of Trinity Court. A resident of Trinity Ct. reported that two masked suspects had jacked up a red Toyota Prius and were stealing its catalytic converter. Prior to patrol arrival, the suspects fled in a dark, 2 door BMW. Ptl. J. Collins saw a car fitting the description of the suspect vehicle in the immediate area, followed it, and was able to read the license plate of the vehicle. The license plate indicated that the car was a black BMW and seemingly was a match for the vehicle it was on. Ptl. Collins activated his lights and siren to stop the BMW. The BMW slowed down initially, but then accelerated away at a high rate of speed. Pursuant to NJ Attorney General guidelines regulating police pursuits, and believing that the offenders could be found later since a license plate number was obtained, no pursuit was initiated. The BMW license plate came back to a resident of North Brunswick, so the North Brunswick police were requested to check for the car in question. North Brunswick police indicated that the BMW we were looking for was at the registered owner’s home, so Ptl. Collins and Ptl. J. Chowanec, went there to investigate further. When Ptl. Collins arrived, he noticed that the BMW he was looking at was not the same as the one which eluded him, even though the license plate number on the back of the car was the same. It was soon discovered that the front license plate of the BMW in North Brunswick had been stolen, and mounted on the back of the BMW involved in the theft.
