School Training underway, at Tonkawa Schools

Today (NOW) Tonkawa Police Department is partnering with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) and the US Department of Homeland Security to train all Tonkawa School District personnel on the “Run. Hide. Fight.” method. The Tonkawa School District will be the first district in the state to have all personnel trained in the “Run. Hide. Fight.” paradigm for active shooter scenarios. Under Governor Kevin Stitt's executive order (E.O. 2022-13), Secure Our Schools (S.O.S), all troopers and large numbers of city police officers and deputies have been receiving LASER (Law Enforcement Active Shooter Emergency Response) training. The Run. Hide. Fight. training is geared towards citizens and trains educators, healthcare workers and other business employees how to react to an active shooter incident. The training is being done in partnership with LSU’s National Center for Biomedical Research and Training/Academy of Counter-Terrorist Education (LSU NCBRT/ACE). Employees will learn the basics of the Run. Hide. Fight. paradigm, which addresses any active threats that may occur. These can include mass shooting incidents, attacks with various weapons or acts of terrorism. They will learn techniques and tools to keep themselves, their students and others safe should an active threat event occur on campus. Instructors will conduct drills in real-time scenarios using simulated gunfire to represent active shooter incidents. Participants use tools they learn in the class to respond, including barricading techniques and other basic skills taught in the Run. Hide. Fight. course. The “Surviving an Active Threat: Run. Hide. Fight.”course is certified by the Department of Homeland Security and covered under DHS’s Homeland Security National Training Program. Again, during this training, citizens in proximity to school grounds may hear sounds that resemble “gunshots” or observe a large police presence at the schools. Do not worry, this is all part of the training. However, no one that is not invited to the training will be allowed on Tonkawa Public School Properties. This includes the Tonkawa Mid-High/High School, Tonkawa Elementary School, and the Tonkawa Schools Event Center. The training started at 7am and is expected to conclude at 3pm. Classes are NOT in session and students are not on campus, today. If you have any questions regarding this training, please contact the Tonkawa Police Department at: (580) 628-2516.

Instructions:

Please stay away from Tonkawa Public School Properties, today, as training is underway.
