South Brunswick Driver Safety Series; Traffic Enforcement Details

DRIVER SAFETY SERIES:

As part of the South Brunswick Police Department’s Traffic Safety Initiative, designed to address a recent increase in serious motor vehicle crashes statewide, the South Brunswick Police Department will offer a new safe driving tip each Friday in hopes of decreasing car crashes and enhancing driver safety.

Safe Driving Tip #10 – The Driver is Responsible For the Safety of All Passengers:

Driving a motor vehicle is a huge responsibility. When operating any motor vehicle, the driver is responsible for the safety of the vehicle's passengers. This means that additional care should be taken when transporting passengers.

Driving a vehicle comes with legal responsibilities, such as assuring that passengers are wearing seatbelts, which is a state law. Drivers may also be held responsible if a passenger in their vehicle is injured in a crash in which the driver was at fault. In addition, drivers may feel personally responsible if a family member or friend is injured due to the driver’s actions.

Because of these reasons, a driver who has passengers in his vehicle should act with reasonable care for the safety of all passengers.

Following these 8 safety tips will help keep the passengers in a motor vehicle safe:

  1. Drive safely at all times – this will help keep you, your passengers, and others on the road safe
  2. Maintain a safe vehicle – upkeep of a vehicle is the driver’s responsibility
  3. Don’t drive while impaired by alcohol, marijuana, medication, or other substances
  4. Don’t drive while distracted – put down your phone
  5. Watch your speed - plan ahead to avoid being in a hurry
  6. Make sure all passengers, especially children, wear seat belts at all times
  7. Make sure children are seated in appropriate child seats or boosters
  8. Ask passengers to not engage in disruptive behavior which may distract you
