Witherspoon Street Phase 1 Construction Update for the Week of December 5th (Princeton Engineering Dept.)

Week of December 5 - December 9, 2022*

Concrete barriers have been installed on Witherspoon Street between Nassau Street and Spring Street. Motorists should proceed with caution, follow the 25 MPH speed limit and adhere to the STOP sign at Spring Street.

  • Earle Asphalt will complete installing the remaining roadway and sidewalk porous pavers along the eastern curb line. On Monday, December 5th, the contractor will form and pour the bump-out curb near the Spring Street crosswalk. The road will be closed for this work.
  • Friday, December 9th, Earle will be cleaning and preparing to temporarily demobilize for the holiday season. They are expected to return in January 2023.
  • Similar to Stage 1, a 4-5 foot wide walking path nearest to the frontage of the eastern businesses will remain for pedestrian traffic. Snow fence will remain in place for the holiday season.
*This schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather or project delays and will be updated accordingly via this newsletter.

Traffic and Parking
  • The active travel lane has shifted onto the new paver roadway.
  • Witherspoon Street will remain open to traffic traveling northbound. Stopping, Standing or Loading is not allowed in the travel lane. Parking is not available between Nassau Street and Spring Street during construction.
  • Temporary detours around Witherspoon Street will be in place during the concrete pours.
  • Motorists should follow posted detours when applicable.
  • Palmer Square, Spring Street Parking Garage, Hulfish Parking Garage and the Griggs Corner Lot will be open and accessible. Residents and visitors are strongly encouraged to utilize the parking garages as on-street parking is VERY limited.
  • A new temporary loading zone was installed on Witherspoon Street between Hulfish Street and Paul Robeson Place / Wiggins Street, along the curb at Hinds Plaza and the public library. All Business delivery trucks shall utilize designated loading zones and crosswalks. Stopping in the travel lane to load or unload is prohibited. Other available loading zones are on Nassau Street, Spring Street, and Hulfish Street.
