SBHS and SBPD Team Up for Safety

Schools and Police Team Up for Safety Time Out

South Brunswick Police teamed up with South Brunswick High School for a timeout for safety on Tuesday. An assembly for all 2,793 students was held where Joel Feldman presented a powerful message on the dangers of distracted driving. In his moving presentation, he spoke about how his 21-year-old daughter, Casey died by a distracted driver. South Brunswick High School Principal Peter Varela and South Brunswick Police school resource officer Detective Scott Bucca thought the assembly was needed to highlight the dangers of distracted driving. “Nationwide car crashes are the leading cause of preventable accidental deaths for young people,” Detective Scott Bucca said. The presentation provided insights into how to discuss difficult conversations to tell family and friends to put down the phone while driving. It showed how everyone can make a difference by speaking up.

The presentation is part of Chief Raymond Hayducka’s broad traffic safety initiative. “We have seen more serious and fatal crashes over the past two years, and distracted driving has been a major factor. It will take a comprehensive approach involving education, enforcement, and culture change to impact driving habits”, said Chief Hayducka.

Joel Feldman created EndDD.org and has given over 900 presentations across the United States and Canada determined to change the mindset that led to his daughter’s death. Casey died after being struck by a van in a crosswalk during daylight hours when on her way to a summer job as a waitress in Ocean City, N.J. She was 21 years old and ready to enter her senior year at Fordham University in NYC.  The van driver claimed he never saw her. He was distracted by reaching for his GPS while holding an iced tea. The presentation left many students and staff with a determination to be more alert and responsive to stopping distracted driving. “It was powerful and left an impact on everyone who saw the presentation”, said Principal Varela.

South Brunswick Police will host a second presentation by Joel Feldman on the evening of December 19th at 7 pm at South Brunswick High School. This presentation is open to all members of the community. Registration is not required but is appreciated. People interested in seeing the presentation can email [email protected] or call (732) 329-4000 ext 7469.
