DETAILS: On December 8th, 2023, The Amarillo Police Department will begin our 100th session of the Amarillo Police Academy. This group of recruits started from a group of hundreds of applicants. We will have 17 recruits including 14 for APD, 1 with Randall County,and 2 with Potter County.
This journey will take them through 32 weeks of training incorporating theoretical knowledge and practical skills. The State of Texas requires 42 separate courses and 720 hours of training that include ethics, penal code, traffic code, driving, firearms, communications, arrest procedures, community policing, etc. The Amarillo Police Academy adds to that an additional 450 hours of training to include high-riskpatrol procedures, less lethal weapons, weapons of mass destruction, riot training, and others. All of this while instilling a level of fitness, professionalism, and discipline our citizens require of new officers.
