Between the months of December 2022 and about April 2023, the Simi Valley Police Department will be transitioning to the California Incident-Based Reporting System (CIBRS), which is an expansion of the FBI’s National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS). The agency will be transitioning from the current Uniform Crime Reporting standard, commonly known as UCR. The Simi Valley Police Department is making this change to meet the federal data standards, which all California agencies must comply.
The new report collection standard, CIBRS, and NIBRS, capture a wide range of information representing a substantial shift in crime reporting to the Department of Justice. The additional detailed crime incident data will provide a greater analytic capability than our current Uniform Crime Reporting standard. Starting on December 19, 2022, the Simi Valley Police Department will update its data systems to support this new data collection and reporting method. From that point forward, the Simi Valley Police Department will participate in a three-month validation period. By April 1, 2023, it is anticipated that the agency will be certified as a CIBRS/NIBRS reporting agency.
An unintended consequence of this transition will be the suspension of our current online reporting method. Until the transition and certification is complete, the department can not accept online reports until all data elements are appropriately synchronized. We are hopeful that after April 1, 2023, we will again be able to receive online reports.
