South Brunswick Driver Safety Series; Traffic Enforcement Details

DRIVER SAFETY SERIES:
As part of the South Brunswick Police Department’s Traffic Safety Initiative, designed to address a recent increase in serious motor vehicle crashes statewide, the South Brunswick Police Department will offer a new safe driving tip each Friday in hopes of decreasing car crashes and enhancing driver safety.

Safe Driving Tip #12 - Vehicle Equipment Safety Check

It is a driver’s responsibility to make sure that their vehicle is safe to travel the roadways. Driving an unsafe vehicle puts the driver, their passengers, and others on the roadway in danger. Driving a vehicle is a huge responsibility which should be taken seriously by every driver on the roadway.

A few things that should be checked regularly, and addressed if found to be a problem:

Windows and mirrors must be kept free of any obstructions. This includes snow, ice, and frost, which should be removed fully before entering the roadway. This also includes grime and haze; your windows should be cleaned regularly. Make sure your mirrors are properly adjusted to give you a good view to the rear.

Tires must be checked to make sure they have enough tread to safely travel the roadway, and replaced if the tread has been worn down, or if any hazardous defects are present such as dry rot, bubbles, or other damage.

Brakes should be continuously evaluated for proper safe function. Listen for squeals or grinding, and feel if they have a squishy feeling or are slow to respond. This fundamental vehicle safety feature should never be compromised. Visit your local mechanic immediately if you notice anything out of the ordinary.

Lights should be checked for proper function and replaced if a bulb is out. Keep lights clean so they provide more illumination at night. Make sure to check all lights, including brake lights, tail lights, turn signals, and hazard lights.

Windshield wipers should be checked to make sure they fully remove any water. Make sure they aren’t streaking or otherwise failing to keep your windshield clear.

Seat belts should be checked to be sure they auto-lock and retract when appropriate. Child seats should be checked for proper mounting and fit, and adjusted as necessary. Seat belts should not be frayed, torn, or loose.

By observing safe driving protocols and taking your vehicle in for regular inspection, you can make the road a much safer place to be.
