INCIDENT: PC 187(a) - Murder
LOCATION: Howard Street/Central Avenue, County Area of Montclair
SUSPECT: Roberto Pizana, 44-years-old, Resident of Pomona
VICTIM: Samuel Esparza, 42-years-old, Resident of Montclair (deceased)
SUMMARY:
On Friday, October 28, 2022, officers from the Montclair Police Department conducted a single vehicle traffic collision investigation on Howard Street and Central Avenue. The victim, later identified as Samuel Esparza, was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
Esparza was transported to the Coroner’s Office where a gunshot wound was discovered. Montclair Police conducted a preliminary investigation and determined the murder occurred in the county area of Montclair. The Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division – Homicide Detail responded and assumed the investigation.
Through continued investigation, homicide detectives identified the suspect as Roberto Pizana.
On Tuesday, December 13, 2022, personnel from the Sheriff’s Specialized Enforcement Division located Pizana in Pomona and took him into custody. He was booked in at the Central Detention Center and later transferred to the West Valley Detention Center where he remains in custody without bail.
