INCIDENT: Outreach Operation
LOCATION: Morongo Basin
SUMMARY: On Friday, December 16, 2022, from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the Community Service and Reentry Division, Homeless Outreach Proactive Enforcement Team (HOPE) conducted a quality-of-life operation in the Morongo Basin area. The goal of the operation was to connect with unhoused residents and offer them services such as housing, medical and mental health treatment and other social services. The HOPE Team located eighteen encampments and spoke with twenty-one individuals experiencing homelessness. Eighteen were provided with referrals to assistance programs, and six were provided with direct assistance. Three individuals desired reunification with their families out of the Morongo Basin area. The HOPE team will attempt to connect with the families and help the individuals work towards reunification.
HOPE team personnel also had the opportunity to participate in the Morongo Basin Station's Coffee with a Cop event, meeting residents and speaking about concerns surrounding persons experiencing homelessness and other quality of life concerns.
The team was able to provide this focused outreach due to Senate Bill 170, which provided funding to the Department to support ongoing operations of this nature. The HOPE team and other aligned resources will continue operations of this type throughout the county over the next several years.
