Home Safety Tips and Vacation Home Checks

Going away for the holidays?  Please consider these home safety tips.  Fremont Police also offers vacation home checks.  More details at:  https://www.fremontpolice.gov/i-want-to/file/vacation-security-check

Home Safety Tips:

  • Always Properly Lock all Windows and Doors: In many burglaries, no force was used. That means the burglars got in through UNLOCKED doors and windows.
  • Have an Appearance: Your house should appear occupied at all times. Use timers to switch lights and radios on and off when you're not at home
  • Install an Alarm System: Consider installing an alarm system that allows for video monitoring and any potential crime to be witnessed and reported in real time.
  • Install a Camera System: Install a wide-angle lens viewer in the front door allows you to monitor and capture anyone approaching your house.
  • Know your Neighbors: Knowing your neighbors and their availability can greatly help to prevent crime in the neighborhood.
  • Warning Signs: Put alarm permit and video system signs in a clearly visible area of the front entrance. Put additional alarm monitoring signs and stickers near all windows and entries to the property. If you have a dog, put "Beware of Dog" signs near all entries to the property.
  • Mark Your Valuables.: Another deterrent to “would be” burglars is to mark/engrave your valuables with your First Initial and Last Name. Burglars sometimes hesitate to take marked merchandise because it is difficult to fence.
  • Hold Your Mail and Delivery: Put your mail and deliveries on hold or have a neighbor pick up mail and packages.

Other Tips:
  • Never leave a house key available: under a doormat, in a flowerpot, or on the ledge of the door. These are the first places a burglar will look.
  • Exterior doors should have “deadbolt” locks with a 1-inch strong metal bar extending into the door frame.
  • Sliding doors and windows should all have “ventilation” locks as well as auxiliary locks to bolster security.

Remember - if you see something, say something.  To report a crime in progress, call 911.  For non-emergency services, call (510) 790-6800, option 3.
