Sussex County Battery Safety Campaign
The SCMUA has started a “Battery Safety” campaign to alert Sussex County residents to the dangers of disposing of lithium ion and other rechargeable batteries in trash or recycling. The danger of these batteries starting fires in our landfill is of great concern.
Residents can bring rechargeable batteries to the SCMUA Recycling Center, Staples, Home Depot and Lowes. Battery terminals must be taped before dropping them off, or each battery placed in a plastic bag.
Note that other small batteries such as lithium metal and button batteries must be brought to Household Hazardous Waste events. Alkaline batteries may still be disposed as trash.
The Sussex County MUA provides rechargeable battery collection at its Recycling Center located at 34 Route 94, Lafayette every day of operation: Monday-Saturday, 7:00 am to 2:00 pm.
Residents with questions about used batteries can find helpful materials at www.avoidthespark.com or for additional information please visit the following link Battery Disposal Program - Sussex County MUA (scmua.org) and review the attached
