Advisory

Town of Bedford Warming Center

Dear Bedford,

Well, we sure are starting off the holiday weekend with some unwelcome circumstances. I know many of you are worried. I aim to bring you accurate updates, and we will provide a warming/charging location for those without power when the temperature drops.

Strong winds brought down trees and poles overnight which resulted in power outages. NYSEG has restored 1600 customers since midnight last night. Crews are in Bedford Hills now, and they will move to other areas of town once the largest outage area (958 customers) is restored.

However, I believe that means there once those are restored, there will still be at least 700 customers without power and neither NYSEG nor Con Ed can tell me when restoration crews will arrive to restore those. I will continue to push them. The strong wind and rain is expected to pick up again later this afternoon which may bring down more lines or may make work difficult for the crews.

To add insult to injury, temperatures will plummet starting around 3pm. Please avoid travel on the roads between 3-7pm. If you are out, stay away from downed power lines and be careful of ice. Our highway crews will be out treating roads once the rain dies down, but cannot start too early before the freeze because the rain will wash the salt away.

Given that it is unlikely all of the power will be restored by this evening, I encourage those without power to make a "just in case" plan to keep warm overnight. If you have power, consider offering a couch to a friend who does not. We will open the Town House Courtroom (321 Bedford Rd, Bedford Hills) at 7pm as a charging / warming center for anyone who wants to hunker down here. If no one shows up, we will close the building at 9:30pm. If you want to come earlier to charge devices or get warm, please let me know.
