Multiple Guns Seized and Suspect Arrested

Numerous firearms were found after a suspect brandished a firearm in a residential neighborhood.

San Mateo, CA – On Thursday, December 22, 2022 at 4:19 p.m., San Mateo Police Department officers arrested a suspect on a multitude of charges after he brandished a firearm at a father and his child. Several firearms were seized from the suspect’s residence and he was booked at the San Mateo County Main Jail.

At 3:05 p.m., officers responded to the 600 block of 10th Avenue in San Mateo on report of a firearm brandishing. Upon arrival, officers learned the suspect, Andrew Paul Michael, retrieved a gun from his home after a brief argument with the victim and the victim’s 4-year-old child after they were seen delivering an invitation to a neighbor’s home. The victim told officers, Michael stood in front of their vehicle while pointing a gun at them preventing them from leaving.

Michael retreated into his residence prior to the officers arriving on scene. Due to the public safety risk, the residential neighborhood was saturated with officers and a perimeter was established around Michael’s home. In addition, a Nixle emergency alert was sent out citywide to subscribing residents. With thanks to the Crisis Negotiation Team, Crime Reduction Team, and patrol officers, Michael eventually surrendered without incident. A gun violence restraining order was obtained from a judge and the home was searched for additional weapons. Officers found and seized multiple illicit firearms, which included an AK-47, a short-barreled AR-15, an AR-15 with a grenade launcher, hand guns, a tremendous amount of ammunition, and firearms paraphernalia.

Michael was arrested and booked at San Mateo County Mail Jail on a multitude of charges.

Always remember, “If you see something, say something.” We are encouraging our community to utilize security cameras. They are especially helpful in identifying suspicious activity in neighborhoods when cameras are street facing. Our officers regularly canvass for cameras and you can help us by notifying SMPD where cameras are located in your neighborhood at www.cityofsanmateo.org/NEST.
