Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office SCAM ALERT
The courts have received calls from people regarding receiving phone calls from a person claiming to be the Jury Commissioner and advising the person they failed to show up for jury duty. The fictitious caller then demands the victim to pay $35.00. If the victim says they cannot pay, the fictional caller will tell the victim a warrant for their arrest will be issued and that someone will be coming by their residence to arrest them.
As a reminder, the courts will not contact persons who do not report for jury service via telephone, nor is there a requirement to pay anything for failing to report unless ordered by a judge. If someone fails to appear for jury duty, the courts will mail a card to the person advising them to contact the Courts. The Courts do not issue or demand a fine or accept payment over the phone. Failure to report for jury duty is a court order violation, and a person could be fined, but only after a judge finds them “in contempt” for not reporting and orders the fine. This would require a court appearance before the judge.
If anyone receives a phone call from someone claiming to be the Jury Commissioner and demands payment from them, DO NOT PAY THEM ANYTHING! Hang up, as this is a scam. If a person is not sure about the authority or legality of a phone call regarding the Jury Commissioner, they are encouraged to call the courthouse and speak with the REAL jury commissioner (209)-754-9800.
