PREPARING FOR NEXT ROUND OF STORMS. See attached message for information relating to preparing for upcoming storms.

PREPARING FOR NEXT ROUND OF STORMS. The National Weather Service has informed us that another atmospheric river storm is expected to hit the Bay Area on Wednesday, Jan 4, 2023.  With that in mind, the City is preparing for the potential of further flooding and offering tips and suggestions for the community to stay safe during the expected heavy rainfall.

SANDBAG STATIONS:
The City has three self-fill sandbag stations for community use.  We ask that everyone please limit themselves to 10 bags per household.

Sandbag stations are located at:

100 Gregory - City Hall
320 Civic Dr - Community Center/Behind the Police Station
Hawthorne Dr. Near Pleasant Oaks Park

City staff is on hand to help in case of an emergency. Seniors or those unable to fill bags can contact Public Works and pick up pre-filled sandbags.  To reach Public Works during regular business hours, residents should call (925) 671-4646 and after hours and on weekends call (925) 288-4600, and the Police Department will contact staff.

STANDING WATER AND FLOODING:
During the New Year's Eve storm event, the City saw a few areas of heavy flooding and several areas of standing water on the streets.  Signage will be placed at flooded areas and motorists are asked to stay out of the flood zones. Not only is there a risk of your vehicle stalling out and becoming stuck in the water, but those who drive around the barricades also push water up onto flooded yards and into the homes along the street.  Please be mindful and stay out of flood zones.

If you are driving and you hit standing water and begin to hydroplane, immediately take your foot off of the gas pedal and let your vehicle slow until you regain control.  When driving in heavy storm conditions, give yourself plenty of extra time to get to your destination and maintain a safe distance between yourself and the vehicle in front of you.  If your windshield wipers are on your headlights MUST be on as well.

SAFETY ISSUES:
Please stay away from downed power lines. Always assume they are energized and dangerous. Report downed lines to 911.

Be wary of trees falling. Because of the extreme saturation of the ground, root structures will be weakened and trees could come down in a strong wind. When out and about (walking or driving) be aware of your surroundings and watch for trees that are leaning. Similarly, be cautious when walking under trees as high winds can also bring limbs down.

POWER OUTAGES:
With heavy rain and strong winds in the forecast, it is possible that Pleasant Hill could experience a power outage.  Residents are encouraged to make sure electronic devices are charged up tomorrow morning in the event of an outage.  Outage information will be available for viewing on PG&E's outage map at https://pgealerts.alerts.pge.com/outagecenter/

STAY INFORMED:
Pleasant Hill Police will release public safety information via the Nixle alert system.  To sign up for Nixle, text your zip code to 888777 and you will be automatically enrolled. To edit what level of emergency alert you receive, you can go to www.nixle.com

Additionally, the City will post information to Nextdoor, as well as Facebook and Twitter when possible.
