Update: Additional Arrest Made in Smith Street Shooting; One of Three Males Injured is Deceased

An additional arrest has been made in Oconto County of a person of interest believed to be connected to a shooting on Smith Street last month, which is now a homicide investigation. A 42-year-old Green Bay man who had suffered life-threatening injuries, has died.

Since the incident, police have been seeking to speak with a 24-year-old Green Bay area man. On January 4, 2023, shortly after 10:00 a.m., officers witnessed a person fleeing into a residence on the 1300 block of Smith Street who may have had connections to the incident on December 20, 2022. Police applied for and were granted a search warrant for the residence.

The residence was immediately voluntarily evacuated at the request of police, and there was only one known person refusing to exit prior to SWAT arrival. There have been no reported injuries.

The Crisis Negotiation Team used basic negotiation techniques, which were unsuccessful. SWAT used verbal commands, noise flash diversionary devices, and less lethal chemical agents to get the person inside to peacefully surrender, which occurred just before 2:30 p.m. This is when a 33-year-old man Neopit, WI man, who currently has an unknown relationship to the residence, was taken into custody on multiple warrants.

While on scene, Green Bay Police had discovered that the person of interest, which is the 24-year-old Green Bay area man, was instead believed to be at a residence in Oconto County. It was with the help of Oconto County law enforcement and assistance of Wisconsin State Patrol under the request of Green Bay Police that this person be taken into custody at a home on the 300 block of Pecor Street in Oconto. Green Bay Police have questioned and jailed this person of interest on a warrant.

The identity of the deceased will not be released per family’s request. The two other men who had non-life-threatening injuries, a 23-year-old Green Bay man and a 41-year-old Peoria, IL man have been released from local hospitals and remain jailed on various charges.

We would like to recognize the Brown County Sheriff’s Office and Green Bay Metro Fire Department for their assistance as well.

The investigation is ongoing. We do not believe that this was a random incident.

No further details will be released at this time.
