Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla thanks electeds for critical Sinatra Drive funding

Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla today announced the City of Hoboken will receive $1.8 million in federal funding for the redesign of Sinatra Drive, the City’s waterfront boulevard. The funding, allocated in the omnibus government funding bill due to the efforts of U.S. Senators Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) and Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and former Congressman Albio Sires (D-N.J.), will be used to reconstruct the 0.7-mile corridor of Sinatra Drive from Fourth Street to 11th Street to provide greater connectivity, accessibility, and greenery by adding Vision Zero and complete streets safety improvements, a protected bike lane, and additional tree plantings.

"The $1.8 million in funding earmarked for the Sinatra Drive Redesign project will bolster our efforts to make our waterfront safer and more accessible for residents, visitors, and all users of the road,” said Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla. "This project will be transformational for the City of Hoboken, bringing us even closer to our Vision Zero goal of eliminating all traffic-related deaths and injuries by 2030. Thank you to Senator Bob Menendez, Senator Cory Booker, and former Congressman Albio Sires for continuing to champion crucial infrastructure projects like our Sinatra Drive Redesign project and advocating for additional funding at the federal level. I’m grateful for your continued partnership and advocacy.”

“The federal funding bill we passed at the end of last year contains significant wins and critical funding for New Jersey, including $181 million for community projects throughout the state that I secured,” said Senator Menendez. “This important infrastructure funding for Hoboken’s Sinatra Drive Redesign Project will make accessing the Hudson River waterfront easier and safer as part of the city’s complete streets initiative.”

“Under Mayor Bhalla’s leadership, the City of Hoboken has made huge strides toward making its roads safer and improving the quality of life for residents,” said Senator Booker. “I’m proud to secure funding that will step up that progress along Sinatra Drive and the waterfront, and I’m grateful to work with Mayor Bhalla and local officials to advance critical infrastructure needs.”

“I’m extremely pleased that we were able to secure this funding for Hoboken, that will beautify Hudson County’s waterfront and improve pedestrian safety,” said former Congressman Sires. “This is what happens when the federal government is responsive to our constituents, and delivering dollars back to our districts.”

In 2021, the New Jersey Department of Transportation awarded the City two grants totaling $1.2 million for the Sinatra Drive Redesign Project. Since then, the City and project team have launched a public planning process to reimagine the road, gathering feedback through community and stakeholder meetings and two online surveys.

The City intends to present a final design to the public during the first quarter of 2023 and break ground on the improvements later in 2023.
