Deputies Arrest Florida Man After Lengthy Pursuit through the Morongo Basin

INCIDENT: Felony Failure to Yield, Felony Evading-Wrong Way Driver
LOCATION: Quail Springs Road & Rock Haven Road, Joshua Tree
SUSPECT(S): Daniel Commander, 47-year-old Resident of Trinity, Florida
VICTIM(S): State of California
SUMMARY: On January 10, 2023, United States National Park Service Rangers were engaged in the pursuit of a blue Nissan with no rear license plate, in Joshua Tree National Park. At approximately 9:59 a.m., deputies assigned to the Morongo Basin Sheriff's Station were requested to responded to the area of Quail Springs Road and Rock Haven Road, to assist the Park Rangers.
Deputies were able to catch up to the rangers at Quail Springs Road and Alta Loma Drive. Deputies activated their overhead lights and siren. The vehicle did not yield, and a 94 mile pursuit ensued through Joshua Tree, Yucca Valley, and Twentynine Palms. The pursuit ended on Highway 177, eight miles north of the Interstate 10 freeway, near Desert Center.
Deputies identified the suspect as Daniel Commander. Commander was arrested for violations of Vehicle Code 2800.2, Felony Evading with Disregard to Safety and 2800.4, Felony Evading Wrong Way Driver. Commander was booked into the Morongo Basin Jail, with bail set at $250,000.00.
