INCIDENT: Death Investigation/Lethal Force Encounter (LFE)
LOCATION: 61700 Block of Oleander Drive, Joshua Tree
SUSPECT(S): Adult Male, Name Withheld Pending Next of Kin Notification
VICTIM(S): CONFIDENTIAL
SUMMARY:
On Wednesday, January 11, 2023, at 8:25 p.m., deputies from the Morongo Basin Station responded to the 61700 block of Oleander Drive, in Joshua Tree, for a report of male subject attempting to break into a home and shouting obscenities at the lone female occupant of the residence.
When deputies arrived, they discovered the suspect broke a window and was attempting to enter the home. The suspect pointed what deputies believed was a weapon at them, and deputies fired at the suspect. The suspect was struck and transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
The Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division responded and assumed the investigation.
During a search of the incident location, no firearms were located, and it is believed the suspect was not armed. Pursuant to Assembly Bill 1506, the Department of Justice (DOJ) was contacted and is conducting the investigation.
