Thursday evening, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) homicide detectives arrested 42-year-old Jermaine Randle for his alleged role in death of 50-year-old Larry Moorman and 23-year-old Shawn Barnett. This arrest was possible due to community cooperation, the use of license plate reader technology, and officer initiative.
On Thursday, January 12, 2023, shortly before noon, IMPD East District officers were dispatched to an apartment building in the 200 block of N. Walcott Street on a report of a person shot. When officers arrived, they located an adult male in a common area of the building with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound(s). Officers located another adult male inside one of the apartment units with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound(s). IEMS arrived and unfortunately the victims were both pronounced deceased on scene.
Homicide detectives responded to the scene to begin the investigation. Detectives were able to speak with witnesses on scene. Through various investigative techniques, detectives were able to identify, Randle as a person of interest and a vehicle that may have been involved. Two hours later, IMPD Northwest District officers located the vehicle with the assistance of license plate readers and Randle was detained in the area of W. 79th Street and N. Michigan Road without incident.
An IMPD chaplain responded to provide assistance to those involved as well as the victims’ family or friends. The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency responded to identify and collect potential forensic evidence. The Marion County Coroner’s Office assisted and determined the cause of death to be homicide.
The investigation continued and detectives were able to identify Randle as the suspect and arrested him for murder.
The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office (MCPO) will make the finial charging decision.
