Two Bicyclist Killed When an Impaired Driver Collides into Them

DATE/TIME: January 18, 2023 / 8:20 p.m.

INCIDENT: Fatal Traffic Collision / PC 191.5 Gross Vehicular Manslaughter While Intoxicated

LOCATION: Foothill Boulevard / Etiwanda Avenue, Rancho Cucamonga

SUSPECT(S): Robert Gubany, 23-year-old Resident of Fontana

VICTIM(S): 41-year-old Male Transient of Upland (Deceased)
33-year-old Female Transient of Upland (Deceased) 


SUMMARY:  On Tuesday, January 17, 2023, at about 8:20 p.m., deputies from the Rancho Cucamonga Station's Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) responded to the area of Foothill Boulevard and Etiwanda Avenue for a traffic collision involving a Kia sedan and two bicyclists. When deputies arrived, the female victim was deceased. The second victim was transported by American Medical Response to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.   
Based on the preliminary investigation, the Kia was traveling east on Foothill Boulevard, east of Etiwanda Avenue. The driver passed traffic on the right in the marked bicycle lane. The bicyclists rode westbound on Foothill Boulevard in the bicycle lane traveling against the flow of traffic. The driver of the Kia collided into the bicyclists and fled the scene. 

Immediately following the collision in Rancho Cucamonga, the driver was involved in a non-injury traffic collision in the city of Fontana. The driver was arrested and identified as Robert Gubany. Gubany displayed signs and symptoms of being under the influence of alcohol. Gubany was booked at the West Valley Detention Center for PC 191.5 -  Gross Vehicular Manslaughter While Intoxicated and CVC 23152(b) - Driving Under The Influence of Alcohol. Gubany is being held in lieu of $250,000 bail.    

Pending next of kin notifications, the victims identities have not been released.
