A commercial truck driver was arrested for driving a commercial tractor trailer (big rig truck) while under the influence of a controlled substance. The driver was also in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. On 1/10/2023, at approximately 2:43 PM, Oscar Lopez was stopped for committing a traffic violation on Los Angeles Avenue (SR 118), near the intersection of Leta Yancy Road. At the time of the stop, Lopez was operating a commercial tractor trailer with a fully loaded trailer and a combined vehicle weight of approximately 80,000 puounds. While the deputy was speaking with Lopez, Lopez displayed outward signs and symptoms of recent drug use. A Driving Under the Influence (DUI) evaluation and investigation was conducted and Lopez showed several signs of impairment. Lopez was arrested for DUI, a violation of California Vehicle Code Section 23152(f). A post arrest search of the commercial tractor trailer revealed Lopez was in possession of several unsealed packages of marijuana, which had a THC concentration of greater than 24%. Additionally, there was a glass smoking pipe located with the marijuana. All of these items were located within arm’s reach of the driver seat. The commercial tractor and trailer were towed after the arrest. During peak daytime traffic hours, there are more than 240 commercial tractor trailers traveling through the city every hour. The Moorpark Police Department recognize the safety concerns related to commercial vehicles and their operation by driver’s who are under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The Moorpark Police Department will continue to enforce traffic laws to keep Moorpark residents and those passing through Moorpark safe. |
