Advisory

Minor pre-dawn earthquake 2AM 10 mi off Malibu coast. No reported damage. Beware of rocks on canyon roads.

A 4.2 magnitude earthquake struck about 10 miles off the coast of Malibu Wednesday, January 25, 2:00 AM, followed by a 3.6 aftershock at 2:03 AM and several smaller aftershocks. The City is coordinating with Los Angeles County partner agencies. The LA County Office of Emergency Management notified the City that no Tsunami was generated, and requested damage assessments from the City. The City’s Building Safety Department is currently working on damage assessments. City Public Works crews are patrolling roads in Malibu, monitoring roads, hillsides and critical facilities and infrastructure for any damage or instability, especially on canyons where recent storms caused rock and landslides. Malibu-Lost Hills Sheriff Station has not reported any damage. LA County Fire Department is conducting “windshield surveys” (patrolling roads and visually inspecting houses, structures and infrastructure). All roads and PCH in Malibu are open and all traffic signals are functioning. Motorists should proceed with extreme caution on Malibu Canyon Road, Kanan Dume Road and other canyons as loose rocks from the recent storms may continue to fall. The City will continue to send out alerts as needed. Residents should monitor local news for emergency information, road closures and other updates.
