Ventura County Sheriff’s Office and City of Ojai Name Next Police Chief

Ojai, CA., — Sheriff Jim Fryhoff is pleased to announce the City of Ojai has selected Captain Trina Newman as its next police chief. Newman has been selected to replace outgoing chief, Captain Jose Rivera after the announcement of his promotion to assistant sheriff.  “Trina has all the skills necessary to continue our community focused effort of providing excellent police services in the Ojai Valley,” said Sheriff Jim Fryhoff.  “Trina, an Ojai resident herself, will be able to lead from the front in our effort to working with our communities to keep Ventura County one of the safest counties in the country.” 
Trina has been a resident of Ventura County since 1998 when she began her career with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office.  Trina earned her bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice Management and has worked many different assignments prior to becoming the Chief of Police of Ojai, including most recently as a patrol Watch Commander.  Trina has served in positions in Operations, Support and Detention Divisions and has supervised such units as Mounted Enforcement Unit, Incident Review Team and as an academy instructor since 2017.  Trina spent several years as a background investigator and was recognized for her efforts of recruitment of women in 2019. 

“The City of Ojai is excited to welcome our new Chief of Police, Chief Newman,” said Ojai City Manager James Vega. “Chief Newman has shown a connection with, and desire to serve, our Ojai community. We look forward to working with her.”

Newman officially began as Ojai police chief on January 22, 2023.  In speaking about the move, Newman said, “I am thrilled to have been entrusted with this position and look forward to serving the Ojai Valley.”
