This alert is regarding a potential phishing/fraud scam utilizing the Signal Hill Police Department business line and a person or persons claiming to work for the Signal Hill Police Department.  Several residents have reported receiving calls from a person named “Alex O’Donnell” or “Jack Wilson”, the caller claimed they worked for the Signal Hill Police Department and that the person called was the victim of identity theft.  The phone number displayed on the Caller ID was the business line for the Signal Hill Police Department and the caller said the same number when asked.  All of the reports stated the caller had a heavy Indian or east Asian accent. 

These calls are not coming from the Signal Hill Police Department and are likely attempts to obtain your personal identifying information.  During an actual identity theft investigation, our Detectives and Patrol Officers may call individuals who have been identified as potential victims of fraud.  But please be cautious when giving out personal information from an unsolicited call. 

If you are unsure if you are actually speaking with a member of the Signal Hill Police Department, get the name of the caller, hang up, and then contact the Signal Hill Police Department directly on our non-emergency line (562)989-7200.  You can also come to the police station lobby or ask to have an officer come speak with you at your residence (if you are a resident of Signal Hill).  We will be more than happy to verify whether or not we are attempting to contact you or someone in your household.
