Auto Theft Safety Tips
Motor vehicles are the primary mode of transportation for many and an indispensable part of our lives. For that reason, the Oakland Police Department (OPD) is providing safety tips for our community members as a guideline to protect themselves from becoming a target of auto theft.
REDUCE YOUR RISK:
• Park in well-lit areas.
• Always lock your vehicle when unattended.
• Never leave keys or key fobs in the vehicle.
• Never leave valuables in the vehicle. This includes laptops, phones, purses, and other valuables.
• Never leave your garage door opener in your vehicle when parked outside.
• Never leave your vehicle running when unattended, especially keyless entry vehicles.
• When remotely starting your vehicle, ensure your vehicle is in clear view.
IF YOUR VEHICLE IS STOLEN, FOLLOW THESE TIPS:
• Immediately contact the police to file a stolen vehicle report.
• Have the vehicle license plate number, vehicle identification Number, identifying characteristics, make, model, and color of your vehicle.
