Advisory

Message from the Chief

Members of the Culver City Community, I, and the men and women of the Culver City Police Department, are shocked and outraged by the horrendous actions of the five former Memphis (Tennessee) Police Officers which led to the death of Tyre Nichols.  The former officers’ criminal actions were appalling, and a total professional failure.  We applaud the swift actions of Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn Davis and the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office to investigate, fire, arrest, and obtain grand jury murder indictments for all five of the former officers.

As a professional law enforcement organization, the Culver City Police Department holds our police officers accountable to the highest moral and ethical standards.  We center our actions on the safety and dignity of all people, and above all, the sanctity of human life.  Any deviation from these standards, by any police department, erodes the public trust and legitimacy that we work so hard to earn and maintain, and tears at the very fabric of law enforcement and community relations. The men and women of the Culver City Police Department tirelessly strive to provide the highest possible level of service and public safety to our community, and to do so in a manner that is compassionate, professional, and is reflective of the high expectations of the diverse community that we have the privilege of serving.

Although this heartbreaking incident occurred in a different part of our country, we understand that a tragedy like this has a profound impact on all of our communities. Some people may decide to organize and attend public gatherings and protests.  The Culver City Police Department is committed to recognizing and facilitating the safe and nonviolent expression of our First Amendment Rights to peacefully assemble and protest.  If you choose to practice this right, we urge you to do so safely and responsibly.
