SMPD Responds to the Release in the Wake of the Memphis Police Department’s Video Release

MEDIA RELEASE / COMMUNITY ALERT
For Immediate Release No. 20230127-002
Friday January 27, 2023

San Mateo, CA – Like you, we are seeing what is unfolding in Memphis, Tennessee regarding the death of Tyre Nichols. The San Mateo Police Department offers its heartfelt condolences to Mr. Nichols’ family, friends, and the Memphis community. Although we have made great strides in our community to address social injustice, this death of a young African American man highlights the necessary work that must be done to ensure all members of our society are afforded fair and equal treatment under the law and criminal justice system.

For our San Mateo community, we understand the actions of five Memphis law enforcement officers tarnishes the badge of every police officer in America. Know that we stand with you against police brutality and we are working each day to raise the bar for the policing profession. As we’ve demonstrated with our Real Talk San Mateo series, we welcome a conversation to discuss policing and how we can do better. If you would like to invite us to your next community gathering, virtual meeting, or get together, please email [email protected].
