Message From Chief Jared Rinetti

 Dear Community Members,

You may be aware of a recent police use of force incident in Memphis, which resulted in the death of Mr. Tyre Nichols. Today, the Memphis Police Department released video footage of the incident. The video footage was disturbing and difficult to watch. The actions of those officers are not reflective of all of us. The men and women of the Union City Police Department take an oath to protect and serve and hold this profession and all human life in high regard. We stand against those who would engage in unnecessary and illegitimate acts of violence against others. We believe in the philosophy of service from the heart, remain committed to the preservation of human life, and hold ourselves to the highest standards.

Our hearts go out to the entire Nichols family as they are undoubtedly experiencing unimaginable pain. We are keeping them in our thoughts as they navigate through this difficult time.

The five former policer officers involved in this incident have been fired by the Memphis Police Department, and they have been charged with multiple felonies by the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office. We have faith in the justice system and believe justice will prevail.

This incident is a tragedy and a negative mark on the law enforcement profession. But it does not represent the thousands of law enforcement professionals who serve their communities with the highest standards. We will continue to train and strive to provide the highest level of service to our community. We appreciate your support and are honored to serve in partnership with our community.

Sincerely,

Jared Rinetti
