Armed Man Taken into Custody After Asking Store Clerk to Call Police

Yesterday, at around 6:56 pm, Dispatch received a 911 call from the clerk of a store in the 100 block of Lopes Road.  The clerk stated that a man had entered the store and placed a handgun on the counter, advising the clerk to call police.  The man then returned the gun to his jacket.

The clerk was able to safely exit the store and officers, along with the Crisis Negotiations Team (CNT), quickly formed a plan to safely detain the armed man, who appeared to have sequestered himself in the store’s restroom area.

Once it was confirmed that no customers were inside, the department’s Bearcat, a rescue vehicle providing an armored barrier between a known armed suspect and the community, was deployed to the scene. Use of the armored vehicle allowed officers to safely approach the store without exposing them to danger (e.g. gunfire), and permitted communication with the man via loudspeaker.

After several attempts at communication, the man briefly exited the restroom area and motioned for officers to enter the store, before again retreating out of sight.  More announcements were made asking the man to exit unarmed and, after several minutes, he appeared again, throwing a firearm towards the store’s front doors.  Shortly thereafter, the man himself emerged from the store and was safely taken into custody.

The man, a 40-year-old resident of Sacramento, told officers he was feeling suicidal.  Following an evaluation, he was placed on a mental health hold and transported to a local hospital.

We’re grateful that quick thinking by Fairfield PD officers and trained negotiations team members led to the safe resolution of this incident.
