The Norton Shores Police Department received information regarding a large number of animals being housed at 2828 Sheffield in Norton Shores. A Pound Buddies director informed the police department that a Norton Shores resident, and owner of Colber Canine, had an excessive number of dogs in poor health and dreadful living conditions.
An anonymous complainant was able to obtain photos of the deplorable living conditions the dogs were subjected too. The situation within the Norton Shores home was described as a significant health hazard to animals within the community due to the extent of distemper infecting many dogs.
Once the Police Department learned of these concerns an investigation was initiated. Norton Shores Police Detective Stephanie Alm obtained a search warrant for the home with the assistance of the Muskegon County Prosecutor’s Office. On the morning of January 30, detectives from Norton Shores Police Department executed the search warrant. Assisting at the scene were Pound Buddies, Harbor Humane Society, and Glen Park Animal Hospital.
In total, 78 dogs were seized from the home and brought to Pound Buddies for evaluation and temporary placement. The Norton Shores Police department is grateful for the assistance of Pound Buddies, Harbor Humane Society, and Glen Park Animal Hospital for ensuring the safety of all the dogs. A subject was lodged at the Muskegon County jail and is charged with Animal Neglect. The Norton Shores Building Division later inspected the home and deemed it unfit for occupancy.
