SMPD Held its Second Annual Badge Pinning & Awards Ceremony
San Mateo, CA - On Thursday, February 2, 2023, the San Mateo Police Department held its second annual badge pinning, swearing in, and awards ceremony to swear in officers and staff who joined the department, to acknowledge the promotions made, to recognize the awards earned, and to celebrate a service retirement all of which occurred since last year’s ceremony.
The afternoon began with the recognition of the service retirement of a reserve officer who served the City of San Mateo for 37 years. The ceremony continued with the swearing in of new and newly promoted officers and staff. During the ceremony, Chief Barberini gave a Chief’s commendation for a SMPD employee’s tireless effort at the department. The department also awarded two Distinguished Service Awards to a Sergeant and an officer who took extraordinary actions while off duty. The ceremony concluded with the presentation of Medals of Honor to two officers for their heroic efforts to extract a driver submerged in water during the storm on New Year’s Eve 2022.
