Family Disturbance Incident in Fremont Led to Arrest of Suspect in San Lorenzo

On January 25, 2023, at approximately 6:45 p.m., Fremont Police officers were dispatched to Central Avenue to the report of a family disturbance between a twenty-eight-year-old female and her thirty-one-year-old ex-boyfriend. Officers arrived on the scene and learned that the male suspect had attempted to drag the victim away from her apartment. The victim was able to break free from the suspect and run to her apartment for safety. However, the suspect stole property from the victim and fled the scene in a vehicle.

Fremont Police Officers determined that a kidnapping and robbery had occurred. Members of the Gun Violence Reduction Team located the suspect parked in a vehicle by himself in a parking lot in San Lorenzo. Officers began communicating with the suspect in an attempt to get him to surrender safely. During this communication, the suspect made several “suicide by cop” statements. At one point, the suspect briefly raised his left arm out of the vehicle window while pointing a firearm into the air. Officers de-escalated the situation by repositioning and then communicating with the suspect through an officer from the Fremont Police Hostage Negotiations Team.

Despite these efforts, the suspect refused to comply. After several minutes, the suspect exited his vehicle, began to walk, and then ran from the scene. Less lethal munitions were used on the suspect, but there was no effect.  Fremont Police Officers chased the suspect on foot across Hesperian Blvd and into another business parking lot.  Additional less lethal munitions were used on the suspect during the foot pursuit, and he soon stopped running.

Fremont Police Officers again established communication with the suspect and created space for the suspect in case he was still armed. The suspect began to run from Fremont Police Officers and Alameda County Sheriff’s Office deputies who had arrived on the scene to assist. The suspect was soon forced to the ground by a deputy and arrested. During the arrest, a pellet gun designed to look like a Sig Sauer P365 handgun fell from the suspect’s person. It was later learned that the suspect purchased this pellet gun from a store just before the initial police contact.

Suspect was arrested and booked at Santa Rita Jail on charges of robbery and kidnapping.  On February 2, 2023, the case was presented to the Alameda County District Attorney’s office resulting in the following charges:  Penal Code 148(a)(1) – resisting arrest, Penal Code 243(e)(1) – domestic violence, Penal Code 484(a) – petty theft, and Penal Code 591.5 – damaging communication device.

We want to thank Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, Hayward Police Department, and Union City Police Department for their assistance during this incident.

Photographs of the pellet gun that fell from the suspect’s person and that of suspect pointing gun on to the air are attached.
