Police Warn Public of Man Impersonating a Police Officer
On 02-08-23 at about 5:30pm, a female driver was driving northbound on Center Avenue near Rockport Road when a black, Hummer SUV attempted to stop her vehicle. The black Hummer had chrome around the front headlamps and red and blue flashing lights. The red and blue flashing lights were near the front headlamps of the vehicle. From her rearview mirror, she could tell the driver of the vehicle was a white male.
The female driver became suspicious and called Rock County Dispatch who verified that the individual in the black Hummer SUV was not a law enforcement officer.
This investigation is ongoing in attempt to identify the suspect. If anyone has information on this incident or any similar vehicles, they are encouraged to call the Janesville Police Department at (608)755-3100, the Rock County Communications Center at (608)757-2244, Crime Stoppers at (608)756-3636 or submit a tip on your smartphone using the P3 app.
Wisconsin emergency light statute 347.25 (1)(a) allows police officers to use red and blue lighting. No other vehicles in Wisconsin are permitted to use red or blue police lights on department or personal vehicles.
If you believe you are being pulled over by someone who is impersonating a police officer, call 911 from your cellphone. Tell the 911 dispatcher you are concerned someone is trying to pull you over in an unmarked car that may not be a police officer. Ask the dispatcher to verify whether the car attempting to pull you over is indeed a law enforcement officer. Do not stop your vehicle or get out of your vehicle until a dispatcher can confirm you are being pulled over by a legitimate police officer. Report anything suspicious to police, don’t wait to make a report.
