Catalytic Converter Thefts

It is no secret that catalytic converter thefts have increased throughout the Bay Area over the last several years. It is important that we do everything we can to prevent these thefts. Our detectives will continue to do all they can to follow up on these thefts, but we also need your help.

  • If you see someone suspiciously tampering with a vehicle, please report it immediately,
  • Do not confront the suspect(s)—they may respond with violence,
  • If you can't park your vehicle in a garage, consider parking it in a well-lit area,
  • Utilize a high-resolution video surveillance system and consider registering with it the Department,
  • The most impactful thing you can do is to have your mechanic secure your vehicle's catalytic converter with a theft security device.

If you witness an in-progress catalytic converter theft, call 911 immediately. Be prepared to share as much information as possible, including the suspect vehicle description, suspect description if seen, and their last known location.

Our officers will respond to the area in attempt to locate the suspects. Officers and Detectives will utilize witness information, video surveillance, regional crime data, and other investigative tools to identify and arrest the suspects.
