Advisory

The Reassessment of Properties, Conducted by the New Castle County Government, Begins in Wilmington on February 20:

The Wilmington Police Department is sharing the below release, issued today by the Mayor’s Office, regarding the upcoming reassessment process for properties in the City of Wilmington:

Mayor Mike Purzycki said today that the City of Wilmington has been informed by the New Castle Government that the County’s reassessment of properties in the City will begin on Monday, February 20 with the neighborhoods of The Highlands, Forty Acres, and Trolley Square. The reassessment of these initial areas will likely continue through early March and then the County will move to other neighborhoods.

According to the County, the next neighborhoods for reassessment sometime in March are Triangle, 9th Ward, Brandywine Village, Harlan Park, and Brandywine Hills. Once these areas are completed, the County government says these neighborhoods will follow: Eastlawn, Price’s Run, Northeast, Eastlake, and 11th St. Bridge, as well as the area near I-495 and the Delaware River. Additional announcements will be made soon by the County regarding specific start dates for these areas.

Why is the New Castle County Government reassessing properties throughout the County?
A property reassessment is a periodic reevaluation of a property's value for tax purposes. Because a reassessment for New Castle County has not been conducted in 40 years, education advocates argued in Chancery Court a few years ago that assessed values should be updated without delay so schools can be properly funded. A judge then ordered the County to begin a reassessment.

What can residents in City neighborhoods expect during reassessment?
The County government has hired Tyler Technologies [tylertech.com] to carry out the property reassessment. Tyler company representatives will be driving vehicles with Tyler company logos and wearing brightly colored vests that also display the Tyler company logo along with a New Castle County-issued photo ID badge (please see the graphics section at the end of this news release). The Tyler representatives will walk through a neighborhood to record property information and take photographs. They will also knock on doors or ring doorbells to ask questions about improvements that have been made to the property in the past four decades. Residents are urged to cooperate with the Tyler representatives in order to assist them in producing an accurate assessed value of a property.
