SPIRO, OKLAHOMA POLICE INVOLVED IN OFFICER-INVOLVED-SHOOTING

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
 
*** The following update is based on an active and ongoing investigation. The OSBI's initial understanding of the facts and circumstances may evolve over the course of the investigation as witnesses are interviewed and evidence is collected and analyzed.
 
Upon completion of the OSBI investigation, agents will submit a report summarizing their investigation to the District Attorney’s Office. The District Attorney will determine whether or not to file charges.
 
SPIRO, Oklahoma (February 10, 2023) – The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) is investigating an officer-involved-shooting involving police officers from the Spiro Police Department. Based on the initial investigation, this is what is known at this time:

  • The evening of February 8, 2023, Spiro police were notified that a man was brandishing a handgun near the 200 block of Broadway in Spiro.
  • The Spiro Police Chief located the man and recognized him as Damon Dante Henderson (12/21/1992).
  • Henderson ran and the Chief pursued him.
  • Henderson stopped and fired his gun at the Chief hitting the tailgate of his police truck.
  • Henderson ran again and was located a short time later hiding in a residence in Spiro.
  • Several tactical officers arrived; however, Henderson was able to evade law enforcement again.
  • Officers searched for Henderson throughout the night.
  • Henderson was located in the afternoon of February 9, 2023, near South Ash Street in Spiro.
  • Spiro officers attempted to approach Henderson, who ran on foot.
  • An officer followed Henderson by vehicle to the 200 block of Southeast 4th Street when Henderson stopped and faced the Spiro officer who was in the driver’s seat of the vehicle.
  • The officer was attempting to de-escalate the situation when Henderson fired his weapon hitting the driver’s door of the unit.
  • The officer returned fire hitting Henderson.
  • Additional officers arrived and began rendering aid until paramedics arrived.
  • Henderson was transported to the hospital where he died.
The investigation is ongoing. There is no additional information to be released at this time.
