IMPD Detectives Make Arrest in May 2022 Murder-Armed Robbery Investigation

INDIANAPOLIS – On Tuesday, February 14, 2023, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) arrested a suspect for his alleged role in the death of 46-year-old Gary Underwood.

On Tuesday, May 3, 2022, just after 1:30 p.m., IMPD East District officers were dispatched to the 1800 block of N. Rural Street on a report of a person shot. Officers arrived and located an adult male outside who sustained injuries consistent with a gunshot wound(s). Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services (IEMS) arrived and transported the victim to an area hospital, listed in critical condition. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, the victim was unfortunately pronounced deceased by medical staff.

IMPD homicide detectives responded to the scene to begin the investigation. The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency responded to identify and collect potential forensic evidence. The Marion County Coroner's Office assisted and determined the exact manner and cause of death.

Detectives continued their investigation and through investigative techniques identified a suspect. With the assistance of the IMPD Violent Crimes Unit (VCU) homicide detectives arrested 19-year-old Ronald Newman Jr. on Tuesday, February 14, 2023, for his alleged role in the murder of Gary Underwood.

The Marion County Prosecutors Office will review the case and make a final charging decision.
