SMPD Makes Arrest for Stolen Vehicle and Probation Violation

San Mateo, CA – On February 20, 2023, at approximately 5:38 p.m., SMPD officers were alerted to a stolen vehicle, a gray 2015 Hyundai Sonata, near the intersection of 3rd Avenue and Norfolk Street. While canvassing the area for the reported stolen vehicle, an officer observed a gray Hyundai traveling westbound on 3rd Avenue.  The vehicle continued traveling westbound before making a southbound turn onto El Camino Real.  The officer began following the vehicle, and shortly after observed the vehicle turn right onto 5th Avenue.  After SMPD Communications confirmed the vehicle as the one reported as stolen, the officer initiated an enforcement stop of the vehicle.  The vehicle yielded at the 500 block of Maple Street.

Immediately after the vehicle yielded, the two rear passengers remained at the vehicle, but the driver and front passenger exited the vehicle and fled on foot.  The driver, later identified as Juan Francisco Campos De Paz, ran southbound on the west sidewalk of Maple St., while the front passenger ran on the east sidewalk.  An officer chased Campos De Paz.  Campos de Paz continued running on Maple St. before turning westbound on Alhambra Road.  At the 600 block of Alhambra Rd., the officer gave Campos De Paz lawful orders to stop. Campos de Paz complied and was detained without further incident.

SMPD learned Campos de Paz was on searchable probation.  A probation search was conducted, but nothing of note was located.  SMPD contacted San Mateo County Probation and requested a probation hold for Campos De Paz, which was approved.  Campos de Paz was arrested and booked into San Mateo County Jail for possession of a stolen vehicle, probation violation, and resisting arrest.
