UPDATE ON POWER OUTAGE. RESTORATION IN PROGRESS. CO 550 ROAD TO REMAIN CLOSED OVERNIGHT

  • POWER OUTAGE UPDATE:
  • Hwy 550 Closure update

Silverton, CO: San Miguel Power Association continues to work on restoring power to over 800 accounts in Silverton. At 8:40am SMPA and TriState reported town wide power outage.

Power is getting re-energeized as of 3:45 PM. Be prepared for outages through the next 24 hours due to storm conditions.

Due to severe weather conditions multiple mountain passes are closed. Highway 550 will remain closed until further notice. San Juan County is in coordination with the Colorado Department of Transportation on the road status. At this time, Highway 550 will remain closed overnight. OEM was able to get the Silverton Grocery Store OPEN but may only be for a few hours today with a backup generator thanks to Sheriff Conrad. They are CASH ONLY and no fridge or freezer supplies available. They do have charcoal, charcoal grills, small propane cans and small cook stoves while supplies last.

In abundance of caution, Silverton locals need to be prepared for continued and prolonged power outage including overnight. Temperatures are expected to be below freezing and we need to be prepared for a night without power.

  • Drip water from your faucets to reduce chances of pipes freezing

  • Use safe forms of heat like a wood fire stove

  • Do not open the fridge or freezer unless necessary to keep food from spoiling

  • Utilize your vehicle for charging phones but realize the gas station pumps do not operate without power.

  • Make sure pets have fresh water, food and can stay warm.

  • Check on your neighbors

What if I do not have a wood stove or a source of heat to keep warm overnight?

  • Stay with family, friends or neighbors who do have a wood stove

If you need to spend the night away from home make sure you take medications, warm clothing and bring your pets with you.

  • If you need shelter in town for the night, please contact non-emergency Sheriff Dept number at 970 387-5531

I am concerned about my neighbor or a vulnerable person in town.

  • Ask if they need help.

  • Contact the Sheriff's Office and a welfare check can be conducted.

What about our drinking water and sewage?

  • The Town of Silverton Public Works has our water treatment plant on a generator

  • Potable drinking water is a priority and is in normal condition

  • Sewer system is on a backup generator and expected to work as normal
