On Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at approximately 4:40 PM, the Santa Ana Police Department received calls of a vehicle attempting to run over pedestrians at MacArthur Intermediate School. Officers responded to the area and located the suspect vehicle occupied by a male adult. An officer attempted a traffic stop of the vehicle; however, the suspect did not yield and a vehicle pursuit ensued. During the pursuit, the suspect drove into a water channel at 3000 South Flower Street, where it overturned. The vehicle caught fire and the male exited and fled from officers. Officers learned the suspect hid in a drainage tunnel within the water channel where they subsequently took him into custody. Fortunately, no one sustained injuries during the incident. The suspect's motive is unknown at this time; however, anyone with information on the case is asked to contact the Santa Ana Police Department at (714) 245-8390.
The arrestee was identified as Nicolas Sanudo (39) from Santa Ana. He was booked at the Santa Ana Jail for assault with a deadly weapon and evading a peace officer.
