UCPD's Military Equipment Use discussion is set for March 28th at 6 pm in the City Council Chambers
In a continued effort for greater transparency, UCPD places high regard on meaningful public input related to the use of military equipment in our community.
On January 1, 2022, Assembly Bill 481 (AB 481) required the City of Union City to adopt a military equipment use policy to safeguard the public’s welfare, safety, civil rights, and liberties.
On May 24, 2022, the City of Union City held a public hearing which included opportunities for public feedback, which subsequently led to the City Council approving UCPD’s “Military Equipment Use Policy,” adding Chapter 2.62 to the Union City Municipal Code on June 14, 2022.
UCPD’s military equipment policy can be viewed on our transparency portal: Police Department Military equipment use policy | Union City, CA
AB 481 also requires UCPD to publish an annual military equipment use report. The 2022 Military Equipment Use Report can be found on our transparency portal:2022-Annual-Use-Report-Final (unioncity.org)
Community Engagement Meeting
UCPD gives strong consideration to the public’s welfare, safety, civil rights, and civil liberties. Department policy requires UCPD to hold a well-publicized and conveniently located community engagement meeting where community members may discuss and ask questions regarding the annual military equipment report.
UCPD had originally scheduled an opportunity for community input related to their annual report and renewal of their policy on March 28th, during the city’s regularly scheduled City Council meeting.
Unfortunately, the City Council meeting was canceled, however, we will still hold our Military Equipment Use Report community engagement meeting on March 28th at 6:00 pm. The meeting will take place in City Council chambers and will include a presentation as well as opportunities to discuss our report and answer any questions. The meeting will be recorded, and live streaming of the meeting can also be accessed remotely using the information listed below under “Remote Access.”
Community members are also encouraged to email any questions in advance so that they can be answered during the meeting. Questions can be sent to Lieutenant Holt at [email protected].
Note: This meeting will not include a public hearing related to renewing our policy. The policy renewal public hearing will be rescheduled and announced when a new date and time has been set.
