If you are clearing storm debris, we are urging you to watch out for downed wires that might potentially be covered. If you see one, stop your work immediately, move at least 25 feet away and call 9-1-1 or Consumers Energy at 800-477-5050 or Great Lakes Energy at 888-485-2537 to report the downed wire.
Treat any lines down as live power lines even if the power is out in your area. Lines can be reenergized at any time with no warning. Stay away from any downed lines and the things the lines may be touching.
If you see a Great Lakes Energy truck, Consumers Energy truck or hazard signs, please slow down and make sure no one is working close to where you are driving before going around them.
- Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Only use generators and grills outdoors and away from windows. Never heat your home with a gas stovetop or oven.
- Use fireplace, wood stoves, or other combustible heaters only if they are properly vented to the outside.
- Avoid fire hazards such as candles. If you do use candles, never leave them unattended while lit.
- Check on neighbors. Older adults and young children are more at risk in extreme cold.
- If you lose power or heat to your home and do not have backup heat options, call 2-1-1 for local warming center options in an area near you.
