Subjects Arrested for Statutory Rape and Possession of a Stolen Handgun 

DATE/TIME: March 9, 2023, 2:27 p.m.

INCIDENT: Statutory Rape, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of a Stolen Handgun, Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance

LOCATION: 800 block of S Ash Ln, Big Bear City

SUSPECT(S): Chance Briggs, 25-year-old resident of Big Bear City Deborah Mcgaughey, 54-year-old resident of Big Bear City

VICTIM(S): Confidential


SUMMARY: In early March, 2023, Deputies were notified of an ongoing sexual relationship between a 16-year-old female and 25-year-old Chance Briggs. An investigation ensued and on March 9, 2023, deputies served a search warrant in the 800 block of S Ash Ln, Big Bear City. Briggs was contacted at the residence along with Deborah Mcgaughey. Deputies conducted a search of the residence for evidence relating to the crime.

Deputies seized several laptops, other electronic devices, suspected methamphetamine, two handguns, and live ammunition. One of the firearms was reported stolen and the other was a non-serialized handgun commonly referred to as a "Ghost" gun. Briggs was found to be in possession of the electronic devices, and suspected methamphetamine while Mcgaughey was found to be in possession of both handguns.

Briggs was arrested for PC 261.5 - Statutory Rape, and HS 11377(A) - Possession of Controlled Substances. Mcgaughey was arrested for PC 496(A) - Possession of Stolen Property, and HS 11550(E) - Under Influence of Controlled Substances. Briggs and Mcgaughey were booked into custody at the West Valley Detention Center. Briggs is currently being held on $30,000 bail and Mcgaughey has since posted bail and been released from custody. Briggs is scheduled to appear on March 10, 2023, and Mcgaughey is scheduled to appear on April 25, 2023, both in the San Bernardino County Superior Court.
