Winter Weather Update from the City of Oneonta
Currently, the National Weather Service at Binghamton predicts at least 10-12” of heavy snowfall with the potential for significantly higher amounts across the area.
The following information is provided to enhance public safety and storm management efforts:
Travel will become difficult – expect that there may be travel restrictions and roads may be closed should a state of emergency be declared. If traveling, be sure to have emergency provisions in your vehicle such as a charged phone, water and blankets. If stranded, do not leave your vehicle running as this can cause carbon monoxide poisoning. The Oneonta Police Department does not determine the necessity for any individual to report to work.
Please clear fire hydrants of snow for a three-foot radius and out to the street.
Vehicles may not park on City of Oneonta streets after 2 ½” of snow fall. Parking restrictions will be enforced by, at minimum, ticketing. Fines begin at $100. Vehicles may be towed based on the ability for Public Works to remove snow from the roadways. The more snow we get, the fewer places we have to put it. Municipal lots, to include the lower and middle levels of the Parking Garage, are open for off street parking as of noon today, March 13, 2023 to allow ample time for those who need it to find off street parking. This is a long duration event and vehicles will have to remain off the streets until the end of the snow event or additional tickets may be issued.
The storm has the potential to bring down trees and limbs, causing damage to overhead power lines and other electrical equipment. Be prepared for any potential outages by keeping battery-operated flashlights and radios on hand and ensuring that all smart phones, tablets and other mobile devices are fully charged. Generators should only be used in well-ventilated areas.
