Narrative:
Since the recent rash of commercial burglaries in the city of Thousand Oaks, patrol deputies have been on high alert for irregular activity.

On 3/10/23, at about 2:30 AM, astute patrol deputies observed a BMW parked in a shopping center comprised mostly of restaurants near Hillcrest Drive and Moorpark Road.  The deputies observed a male suspect wearing all black, standing near a pillar, by a window of a restaurant.  As the deputies drove into the parking lot, the suspect moved around the pillar to stay concealed from their view. While observing the suspicious behavior, the deputies began to drive towards the BMW when the suspect ran to the car and drove away at a high rate of speed.  As the suspect car entered the roadway, deputies observed the vehicle run a red light at the intersection.

Deputies quickly followed and activated their red lights and sirens to initiate a traffic enforcement stop for the red light violation.  The suspect failed to yield, and a short vehicle pursuit ensued.  The suspect drove at a high rate of speed on the NB US 101 before exiting on Wendy Drive and turning onto Grande Vista Drive, which is a cul-de-sac.  Deputies cornered the suspect at the end of the street and conducted a high-risk enforcement stop.  The suspect was compliant and taken into custody for felony evading.

The suspect was identified as Daron Sawall from Los Angeles.  A search of his person revealed he was in possession of a window punch, black gloves, a flashlight, and illegal drugs.  Deputies searched Sawall’s vehicle and located a crowbar, a Sawzall, tool set, shoulder bag and a handgun loaded with a 30-round magazine that contained 28 rounds.  The gun was reported stolen out of Pomona. Sawall is also a convicted felon.

Sawall was arrested for PC 25850(a)- carrying a loaded firearm, PC 29800- felon in possession of a gun, PC 30305(a)(1)- prohibited person in possession of ammunition, PC 32310- possession of a large capacity magazine, PC 496(a)- possession of stolen property, PC 466(a)- possession of burglary tools, PC 664/459- attempted commercial burglary, HS 11350(a)- possession of a controlled substance  and PC 2800.2 - felony evading.

Sawall was booked at the Ventura County Main Jail for the above listed charges with bail set at $150,000.00. Sawall was also booked on a $60,000.00 traffic warrant out of Antelope Valley.  Sawall has an arraignment date of 3/14/23 at 1:30 PM.

The East County Career Criminal Investigative Unit has evidence indicating Sawall is responsible for four other restaurant burglaries that occurred in Thousand Oaks in early March of 2023, along with other burglaries throughout Southern California.  The four Thousand Oaks burglary cases will be filed with the District Attorney’s Office 3/14/23.
