Major Injury Vehicle Collision
Union City, CA – On Wednesday, March 15, 2023, at approximately 7:41 am, Union City Police Officers responded to the Starbucks located at 33115 Mission Boulevard to investigate a disturbance. Upon their arrival, officers were approached by a male subject who was acting aggressively and demonstrating erratic behavior. Officers asked to speak with the individual, but the individual turned away from the officers and walked away from the immediate area.
After the individual walked away, officers met with the Starbucks’ staff and confirmed that no crime had been committed. Instead, the staff confirmed the individual had been displaying erratic behavior. As officers were speaking with the Starbucks’ staff, the individual made his way back to the business. Again, in an attempt to provide the individual with resources, officers tried to speak with the individual, but the individual walked away. Officers did not chase this individual, as no crime had been committed. At approximately 8:02 am, Officers decided they were going to end their investigation, however they did remain in the area.
At approximately 8:11 am, officers witnessed a collision on Mission Boulevard, south of the Starbucks. The collision involved a motor vehicle and a pedestrian. Officers quickly responded to the collision, where they contacted the same male individual from the disturbance at Starbucks. The individual appeared to be suffering from significant injuries as he laid in the roadway. Officers began providing medical aid, until medical personnel arrived and took over medical aid. The individual was transported to a local hospital, where he is being treated for his injuries. The individual remains in critical but stable condition. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene of the collision and has cooperated with the investigation.
The Union City Police Department understands that this is a tragic incident for everyone involved and would like to express our condolences to the families impacted by this incident.
