Witherspoon Street Phase 1 Construction Update for the Week of March 20th - March 24th (Princeton Engineering Dept.)

Week of March 20 - March 24, 2023*

  • Earle Asphalt Co. will continue sidewalk removal, curb installation, and sidewalk paver installation on the west side near the Hulfish Street and Spring Street intersections. Curb installation on the west side between Hulfish Street and Paul Robeson Place will also begin. Foundations and conduits for the pedestrian push buttons near the Paul Robeson intersection will be installed.
  • Pedestrians will be rerouted to the nearest crosswalk or the opposite side while areas are blocked off during construction. Wooden walkways will be available near business entrances to provide access for employees, patrons, and deliveries.
  • NJDOT's contractor has completed the installation of granite curb and new concrete sidewalk along the north curb line at the Nassau Street intersection. Some sections are awaiting underground utility work before full restoration. The curb ramp and sidewalk work on the south curb line near the University will be on hold temporarily due to material delays.
  • A New temporary loading zone has been striped on Hulfish Street between Witherspoon Street and Palmer Square East, opposite Griggs Parking Lot. Business delivery trucks should continue to utilize designated loading zones. Stopping in the travel lane or blocking intersections to load or unload is prohibited.
  • Other available loading zones are located on Witherspoon (near the Library), Nassau Street, and Spring Street.
*This schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather or project delays and will be updated accordingly via this newsletter.

Traffic and Parking
  • Witherspoon Street is a one-way street northbound. The left (west) side of the white paver line is a 10-foot designated service lane. The right (east) side of the white paver line lane is the 10-foot travel lane. Stopping, Standing, or Loading is not permitted in the active travel lane.
  • Periodically during construction, Witherspoon Street between Nassau Street and Spring Street may experience a lane shift or temporary road closure to deliver material and equipment to the work area. Detour signage will be in place during those occurrences.
  • Metered parking spaces on Hulfish Street between Witherspoon Street and Palmer Square East will remain bagged until construction completion.
Waste Collection
  • New trash carts have been delivered for some residents on Witherspoon Street. Residents should use the new carts and place them in front of their building front on collection days.
  • Beginning the week of March 20th, trash and recycling collection for businesses on both the west and east side between Nassau Street and Spring Street can occur curbside in front of the respective business. Businesses whose collection is in Tulane Yard should be collected as normal.
  • Businesses between Spring Street and Hulfish Street may put their carts curbside; there will be assistance in making sure the trash and recycling are collected.
