Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) Aggravated Assault detectives arrested 27-year-old Marqueses Tipton for his alleged role in Monday afternoon shooting along 7000 N. Keystone Avenue.
On Monday, March 20, 2023, just after 3:15 p.m., IMPD North District officers were dispatched to East 71st Street and N. Keystone Avenue for a report of shots fired. As officers were responding they were updated through communication that there was a person shot inside 7024 N. Keystone Avenue. Officers were advised the suspect shooting had fled the scene and were giving a brief description of the vehicle.
Officers arrived and located a 64-year-old, woman with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound inside the business at 7024 N. Keystone Avenue. Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services responded and transported her to a local hospital in critical condition.
Tipton returned to the scene and told officers he was the person firing shots and officers immediately detained him.
Aggravated Assault detectives responded to the scene and began their investigation. Information gathered from witnesses and supported by electronic surveillance cameras in the area led detectives to believe that this incident started when two drivers, one being Tipton, had been involved in a crash while travelling southbound on N. Keystone Avenue. The drivers pulled their vehicles into a gas station parking lot when Tipton observed a third vehicle drive onto the gas station lot and the vehicle started to drive off.
Tipton then began firing his weapon multiple times at the vehicle as the car drove southbound from the location. Tipton struck the vehicle at least once. The business at 7024 N. Keystone was directly in line with the direction in which Tipton was shooting at the vehicle.
The driver of the third vehicle which Tipton shot at, called the police, returned to the scene and cooperated with detectives.
Detectives continued the investigation and spoke with Tipton. Detectives arrested Tipton on charges including criminal recklessness with a weapon and aggravated battery. The Marion County Prosecutors office was consulted and will review the case and determine a final charging decision.
